Okhona Designs Projects is an entertainment and television broadcasting equipment business supplying an elite group of clients. Lesetsa Ledwaba, the Managing Director of Okhona Designs Projects, formally established his business in 2013. The entertainment industry has boomed over the past decade and the many businesses entering the industry has made it difficult for entrepreneurs to run a successful business such as Okhona Designs Projects. This is what Les had to say about his business life:
I completed my National Diploma in Performing Arts Technology at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) so my choice to enter the technological side of the entertainment industry was obvious. I have been in the industry for about 18 years now and my focus is on the Stage Lighting Designs, and New Innovative Technology.
This is the second business of its nature that I have been involved in. After working for some of the leading Production companies in SA and having been a partner in other companies, I then ventured on my own and started Okhona Designs Projects in 2013 and haven’t looked back.
Okhona Designs Projects is an events equipment rental company. We supply equipment and offer an operations package to manage broadcasting, television and entertainment events in the industry. We also do consultation and advise our clients in terms of the latest technology. We offer holistic solutions for stage and sound, lighting, audio-visual broadcasting and videography.
Our focus is mainly around Lighting Designs, Installations and Operations and we do our best to ensure every customer receives the same outstanding service that Okhona Designs Projects has become known for. Our team works hand in hand with our customers to conceptualise the event and ensure that we cover all the aspects needed for that project ensuring that we provide our customers with great quality and valuable service.
Every event is different, and my team and I always aim to offer a unique, special service in order to provide a higher level of customer service.
We are often not taken seriously by government, big corporate clients and financial institutions. We are always considered high risk and are often not assisted in a country with a high percentage of unemployment.
I think there are just too many of us doing a similar thing. The market is very congested. We try to stay away from the “normal” type of set ups and have focused on more complex events and specialise in the broadcasting space.
We also hope to manufacture the products we are currently hiring out to our clients. All of our equipment is imported and there are a limited number, if any, of businesses manufacturing the technology we use. In 5 years, we would like to see ourselves in the manufacturing side of the industry and we hope to someday fill this gap in the South African market.
Previously I was working from home. The equipment that we use couldn’t be stored there so it was scattered in different studios around the northern part of Johannesburg.
I needed a space for my equipment and a base from which to operate. Okhona Designs Projects was growing and we were accumulating more and more equipment. We needed to store our equipment and we needed a professional environment to call home for my business.
I chose Co.Space because of the location as many of our clients are based in the northern suburbs. Co.Space offered us a convenient space and the decision to move made sense.
Working in the entertainment industry means your work hours have to be very flexible. It is not your standard 9 to 5 job and Co.Space’s 24/7 access was a real bonus for us.
Co.Space also allows you to be exposed to a world of possibilities through networking. It is a care free environment that suits our business model.
Co.Space offers a professional home for Okhona Designs Projects.
Why choose Co.Space?
First of all, the rent is very reasonable and allows me to invest the money into other areas of my business. Co.Space also offers this sense of community where you can interact with other business owners. The help, advice and support that other entrepreneurs can offer you is invaluable. So, I think that the sense of community that the space has created amongst entrepreneurs, to me, is just something that you can’t put a price tag on.
Co.Space also offers a professional environment in which to work and meet clients, that working from home just can’t match.
We recently were involved in the set up of the Global Citizen at FNB Stadium, also known as Soccer City. We supplied MTV Base Africa Red Carpet Interviews with lighting equipment.
We are also currently supplying a number of broadcasting companies such as those that produce content for SABC, Mzansi Magic, Boxing Events and Corporate gigs, such as the Reserve Bank.
Advice for other entrepreneurs
What you put in is what you get out. Don’t be discouraged if your business doesn’t excel straight away. Entrepreneurship is a slow learning process. Wealth creation can also be a long drawn out process. If you have started, good for you. Remember, all big companies started small. You need to be committed. There are no shortcuts to success.
